Thanks mostly to the concentration and effort of senior Preston Bowman, the Block Bears came from behind with less than two minutes to play to defeat the Delhi Charter School Gators 20-13 in last Saturday's Vidalia Jamboree.
Paying just two 12-minute halves, the Bears were down 13-8 with under two minutes left in the scrimmage when quarterback Chuck Bowie launched a long pass to Bowman from near midfield. The pass was short, but Bowman had a bead on it and pulled the ball in after it was deflected by a Gator defender, scoring six points and putting the Bears ahead 14-13.
Delhi took over, looking for a quick score, but on the second play of their possession, Bowman was in the right place again as he snatched another deflected pass out of the air and ran the interception back 65 yards for another TD, his second in less than half a minute, bringing the score to its final 20-13.
Vashawn Davis put the final nail in the Gators' coffin when he intercepted on the next and last Delhi possession.
Davis also scored the first TD of the game on the Bears first play from scrimmage on a 50-yard run. Trey Vault punched in the two-point conversion, and the Bears were off to a good 8-0 start.
Late in the first half, Block started showing signs of fatigue, and midway through the second half, there was no doubt about it. The Bears were tired.
The Gators scored their first TD late in the first half, but missed the extra point. Their next score came in the second half, and they tacked on the extra point.
The Bears showed they have the heart to win and to come from behind to do it, but conditioning will have to be a major part of the next several weeks if Block is to be prepared for district competition and 48 minutes of play.
They will face Vidalia this Friday night in Jonesville. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Good luck, guys. Take it to 'em!
