Emily G. Brackins
Mother Emily Green Brackins was born in Utility, La., of April 1, 1921, and
departed this life on Wednesday morning (1:50 AM), August 5, 2009, at the Baton
Rouge General Hospital.
Mother Brackins was the third child born to the union of the late James (Jim)
and Mary Bell Green. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Henry
Brackins on February 1, 1941. To this union seven children *two sons and five
daughters) were born.
Mother Brackins was baptized in 1992 by Rev. Rodney McFarland, Sr., at the
Ackland Creek Baptist Church in Jonesville. She actively and faithfully served
as a Mother of the church until she moved to Baton Rouge in 2002 due to her
failing health. On October 17, 2004, Mother Emily Brackins was the honored 1st
place recipient of the Ackland Creek M. B. Church Mother
’s Board contest (for raising the most money) and was presented with an engraved
plaque.
Mother Brackins was a prayerful, beautiful (both physical and spiritual), kind,
loving, strong-willed
African American woman of God whose faith in the Lord Jesus Christ was
unyielding. She was widowed at age 42, yet she chose not to remarry (a great
sacrifice at such a young age) adamantly stating,
“I will not allow another man the right to rule over my under aged children (five
daughters and one son). She exemplified the Proverbs 31 woman as a godly mother
who daily kept each of her daughters and sons well-groomed and fed. Moreover
she encouraged all seven children to stay in school, learn all you can so they
could grow up to be mature, stable, honest working citizens in their homes,
jobs, and communities.
We thank God for the gift of Mother Emily Green Brackins’ long life of 88 years to enjoy each of her children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and godchildren. She had a beautiful inner-spirit touched
only by God and His precious Holy Spirit, she enjoyed life, she could interact
with people and children of all ages. Even the pet animals in her children
’s family loved her and were gentle to her. She kept her faith high and looked
upward to Almighty God in Christ Jesus. She knew her traveling time had come
and while hospitalized she began to say,
“I want to go. I’m ready to go!” as she continued to say her “Our Father” prayer that Jesus taught. God called, she answered and He led her safely home.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Henry Paul (Dinisha) Brackins,
Memphis, James Taylor Brackins, Capital Heights, MD; five daughters, Mary Jean
(Brim) Stewart, Flint, MI, Elnora B. Brown (Bobby, Sr.), Tempe, AZ, Shirley B.
Dawson, Baton Rouge, Susanne B. Collins) Stevens, Oakland, CA, Nadie B. Holmes,
Flint, MI; one brother Archie Green, Winnfield, 15 grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren; a devoted cousin, James Polk; two dear friends: Eliza
Barber Frank, and Alice M. Holly Brackins, four special friends of endearment:
Alzine Doodley Beard, Cecilia Brim Barnes, Marie Craven and Josephine Bell
Jones; three sisters-in-law, Elnora Kirkland and Susie Brackins of St. Louis,
MO, Eloise Roy of Jackson, MS, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and
friends.
Mother Emily Brackins was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Green Parker,
her brother, Elmo Green, and one grandchild, Missy Debbie Marie Brim.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 10, 2009, at 11 AM at Ackland Creek
Missionary Baptist Church, Jonesville, Rev. Curtis Smith, pastor, with Rev.
Frank Young officiant and master of ceremonies, Bishop Rodney McFarland, Sr.,
eulogist.
