Christmas Message - The Wisemen (published December 23, 2009)
|
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
By Rev. Leon Zordan, Jonesville United Methodist Church
Notice I didn’t say three wise men! I don’t think they would have demonstrated their “wiseness” by trekking through days and nights of desert sands by themselves. Additionally, if they were kings, they definitely would not have traveled by
themselves for their journey from the East to Judah would have been dangerous
as roving bands of robbers, thieves, and brigands were known to frequent these
remote areas.
However, these three: Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar are indelibly etched into the western tradition
as the three Magi from the East who traveled to Jerusalem searching for the
Christ Child
—the King of the Jews. Their cultural origins are suspected to be from ancient Babylon or somewhere in
Mesopotamia (i.e. the Fertile Crescent).
These Magi
(Gr. Magoi) were also reputed to have been from a priestly caste among the
Medes.
They were learned men full of erudite lore. They were advisors to kings as well as astrologers (stargazers) who studied the
heavenly bodies.
Most importantly, they were gentiles. Gentiles who noted the birth of a Jewish King! Striking their tents and assembling their entourage, they proceeded in a
westerly direction to find this King of the Jews.
Their navigational aide was a “star”. Johann Kepler calculated that there was a conjunction of the planets Jupiter and
Saturn in May, October, and November in the constellation Pisces in the year 7
B.C.
Some scholars see an allusion to this phenomenon. However, St. Matthew’s word for star is “aster” and not constellation or “astron”. It is possible or even probable that St. Matthew had a unique star in mind that
marked
Jesus’ birth. That star could only have been a manifestation of the “Shekinah Glory”— God’s very presence.
Whatever were its origins (and I subscribe to the latter), the Star guided the
wise men to Jerusalem.
Possibly traveling by night and resting by day because of the extreme heat,
their arrival, from the Biblical perspective, stirred the whole city.
Redirected to Bethlehem, they arrived on location at “the place” or at “the house” where the child was. Dismounting their dromedaries, they presented the Christ Child with valuable
gifts:
gold, frankincense, and myrrh—odorous gums and precious metal.
These wise men were wise in seeing great possibilities in small beginnings.
Also, they saw the zenith of their lives in the adoration of the Christ Child.
Warned in a dream to return to their native land by an alternate route, thus
avoiding Herod, they as gentiles carried the good, glad news of the Christ
’s birth to the gentile world.
This Christ Child, this Jesus deserves the homage of our hearts and the choicest
gifts that we can bestow as well as our love on Him.
His birth made Him the center of the universe, the center of all men. How “wise” are you? Have you made Him the center of your life? You can this Christmas Season by attending the church of your choice and confessing Him
as savior, lord, and king and by being baptized in His name.
Shalom
