Church Fest activities were moved indoors last Friday evening due to the threatening rain clouds, but Saturday ’s weather stayed clear and fairly comfortable for the day’s activities.
With Theresa Trisler opening Friday’s activities with her beautiful singing voice, the stage was set for an outstanding two-day celebration.  Corbin Carpenter’s testimony, along with his mother’s (Theresa Carpenter), which followed Mrs. Trisler’s performance, moved many people in attendance. The young man, who shows no signs of the traumatic experience he went through, spoke easily about his faith and his assurance from the Lord that “everything would be okay.” His mother found it a little more difficult to tell of her son’s bull ride during the National Finals High School Rodeo last year in Farmington, NM, which left him paralyzed for a time.  They only hit the “highlights” of the experience, which are told in detail in the book Mrs. Carpenter wrote “Spurs, Chaps & Faith,” available for purchase now.
Patsy Nugent was named the winner of the Red Beans & Rice competition, judged Friday evening.
Mrs. Nugent also prevailed in the Layer Cake competition held Saturday. Her Coconut Cake won first place while Bettie McLawchlin ’s entry of the Elmly Chocolate Cake took second place.
Local photographer Candy Fairbanks had her work cut out for her as she judged the Photo Contest.
Winners in the “Pets” category included Kacie Boyette, 1st place; Shea Boothe, 2nd place; and Shea Boothe, 3rd place.
Winners in the “People” category included Tracy Mock, 1st place; Audrey Sanders, 2nd place, and Kacie Boyette, 3rd place.
Winners in the “Landscape” category included Cindy Robinson, 1st place; Cindy Robinson, 2nd place; and Donna Denny, 3rd place.
While the final round of Church Family Feud was going on in the courtyard Saturday morning, the first annual Diaper Derby was held inside the fellowship hall. Family and friends cheered the tiny competitors on as they made their way crawling and toddling down the 5-foot race track of carpet covered by bamboo mats.
Between worship services and competitions, guest authors Jo Bower and Cindy Robinson introduced themselves and told a little about their careers and their books available.
Everyone enjoyed Church Family Feud as teams faced off answering questions on Biblical topics, trying to name the top answers given in a survey conducted earlier this summer. Liberty Worship Center edged out Meyers Bend Pentecostal Church in the final round to claim the championship.
The festival also introduced its first Children’s Bible Stories Parade this year. All the entries were children on floats, bicycles, tricycles, and walking as well as the Jonesville Fire Department in their spiffy little red ATV sporting Ax the Dalmatian mascot as the parade ’s unofficial grand marshal.
All in all, it was a very enjoyable festival.

The Sixth Annual Chance's Poker Run at Our Downtown was held last weekend and brought motorcycle enthusiasts out in droves to our small community.
This year, the event was held to benefit Glen Franklin and his family. Glen, a State Trooper with Troop E for the last 17 years, is battling Polycystic Kidney Disease. He is currently in Stage 3 of the four stages of the disease. Once Stage 4 is reached, Glen will need a kidney transplant.
The Poker Run raised just over $23,000 for the Franklin family.
Thanks to everyone involved with the benefit, and good luck and God bless to the Franklins.

More Jones-Liddell Feud re-enactment plans unfold  (published September 23, 2009)
Vendors! Entertainment!   Food!  Re-enactment!
This is what you will enjoy if you come to the Catahoula Parish Jones-Liddell Feud Re-enactment on Saturday, November 7th, from 9:00 until, at the Four Rivers Park behind the seawall in Jonesville.  Vendor booths will set up about 9:00 selling crafts, food, face painting, etc.  Entertainment on the big stage will begin at 11:00 with two singing groups providing the music for your enjoyment:  the Mt. Sinai Men’s Quartet with professional musicians Samuel and Darrell Hollins at 11:00 and Lavienna Mason, Mary Scoggins, and Rhonda and Jackie Morris (who entertained us so royally at the 2008 Feud presentation) at 12:00.
A charge of $1.00 per adult will be taken to generate money for the proposed museum.  There will be no charge for children.  Copies of the story of the Jones-Liddell Feud, written by W. D. Cotton of Rayville, can be purchased at the gate.
Before the presentation, Mayor Hiram Evans, on behalf of the town of Jonesville, will give the Welcome; Hannah Cotton will sing the National Anthem, and Bill Atkins will give a brief explanation of the Great Mound that is being replicated from the original dirt taken from the demolition of the old bridge and the plans for the proposed museum.  Work will begin on the museum in the Purvis building as soon as Jonesville receives a Preserve America Grant.
Our feud presentation will begin at 1:00, lasting approximately one hour so all football fans can get home in time to watch the “feud” between LSU and Alabama at 3:30 on national TV.  Seating on bleachers will be provided, but some of you may want to bring chairs just in case.  We anticipate a very big crowd to watch this truly amazing “true” story of Catahoula Parish’s history.  In case of rain, an alternate site will be announced at a later date.
The planning committee composed of Dot Lazarus, Ruth King, Bill Atkins, and Jimi Johnson are in the process of finalizing details.  A list of actors and the parts they play will follow as soon as the list is complete, as well as a list of all the vendors, and the Catahoula Parish volunteers who will make this presentation possible.   Stay tuned for many more details!
