Catahoula Relay for Life is this Friday (published May 27, 2009)
On May 29, Friday night at the football field in Jonesville, the people of
Catahoula Parish will gather together to celebrate life.
It will be a night of food, fun, and entertainment. It’s also a night to honor those who are surviving through cancer and to remember
those whose lives were cut short by this horrible disease.
The 2009 Relay in Catahoula Parish in held in honor of Woodrow Martin, Sr., and
Raymond Rouse and in memory of Charlie Sanson and Eliza Smith (Please see
related sories about these amazing Catahoulans in Section B).
The survivors’ tent will open at 5:15. There survivors can sign up and receive a free T-shirt (supplies are limited). After the welcome all survivors will walk a victory lap to show that together we
will succeed in finding a cure.
The luminary ceremony, set to begin at 9:15 p.m., highlights the evening as a
time when we pause to hear the names of loved ones who have fought cancer.
When the list is read, it serves as a poignant reminder that cancer has a face
and is personal.
The lights of the luminaria shine as a sign of hope that each day is one day
closer to eradicating cancer.
Luminaria can be purchased for $10 on the night of Relay, from any team member,
or via the form below.
Contact TeRan Book at 339-6755 if you have questions.
In case of rain, the Relay will be held in the Block High School Auditorium.
Come to the Relay, and remember your loved ones.

Jonesville Council looks at stray dog problem (published May 27, 2009)
At the May Jonesville Town Council meeting, the council heard from several
citizens and the postmaster regarding the stray dog problem within the city
limits
causing the postal service to halt the delivery of mail.
Postmaster Susan Hayes addressed the council, explaining that she has gone on
the routes with the postal carriers and seen first-hand the trouble they are
having with stray dogs. After discussing the situation, Mayor Evans asked Mrs.
Hayes to give him two weeks
’ time to address the matter and get back with her.
The mayor and council then heard from Oliver Tiller with the Census Bureau. Mr.
Tiller gave a presentation on the importance of the 2010 census and how it
affects communities in regard to grant funding. He explained that our federal
funding is based on population and that number is based on the census.
The council discussed the scheduling of the use of the basketball courts due to
an incident recently at the courts. Mayor Evans said he has been dealing with
fighting among young adults over the past few weeks and decided to limit the
use of the basketball courts to Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until a
solution could be found. He has asked the police department to make it a point
to be there when large crowds are on hand, while admiting that they cannot be
there all the time. He asked for recommendations or suggestions in solving this
problem.
Evans informed the council of the official retirement of Donnie Littleton as
fire chief. He mentioned the retirement party given for Littleton rec
ently. Councilman Stephen Mophett, also a volunteer fireman, added that
Littleton has been a member of the Jonesville VFD since he was 14 years old.
Evans and the council extended the time frame of the interim police chief,
Eldred
“Bubba” Roy, until the permanent chief has been hired as they had not yet selected a
chief.
Ms. Bullitts noted that the annual Juneteenth Celebration was scheduled for June
19th and told the council that the Vidalia Wal-
Mart had donated $1,000 to the Town for the celebration. She asked the council
to approve matching funds of $1,000 from the recreation fund. The motion
passed.
