Memorial Day Program slated for Sunday (published May 20, 2009)
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. When it was started or who
started it is a question that has many answers.
But, does it really matter who started it or the fact that someone did it to
show respect to those who had fallen in combat serving their country.
The act of decorating graves with flowers and flags is the least we can do for
someone who gave their all so we can enjoy freedom.
Through the years the dates and meaning behind Memorial Day has changed. When Congress changed it to the last Monday in the month of May with the
National Holiday Act of 1971 it began to loose its meaning.
People started thinking it was a great time to have a party, take a trip, or
that it meant it was the beginning of summer.
Memorial Day was once a day sat aside to remember those who gave their lives so
we can live in a free country and now it is better known for a three day
weekend.
At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored and
neglected. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day
parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is
for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our
country.
To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the
"National Moment of Remembrance" resolution was passed in Dec 2000 which asks
that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans "To voluntarily and informally
observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from
whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to "Taps."
The Moment of Remembrance is a step in the right direction to returning the
meaning back to the day. However, what is needed is a full return to the
original day of observance by setting aside that one day out of the year for
the nation to come together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given
their all in service to their country.
Four Rivers For All Veterans will hold its annual Memorial Program at Block High
School Auditorium on Sunday, May 24, at 2 p.m.
Guest Speaker for the program will be LTC Michael Deville. Rev. Leon Zordan, Jr. will emcee the Memorial Program, and Dr. Dave Mayes will
offer a Memorial Prayer.
David Jordan and Family from Harrisonburg will be singing the National Anthem
and other patriotic songs and will perform the playing of Taps.
A slide show of area Veterans who gave their all will also be shown. This will also contain pictures of local POWs and a listing of all of the
casualties from Catahoula Parish during WWI, WWII, Korean, Vietnam and Global
War on Terrorism. Catahoula Parish has given many of its young men during all
of these wars with the exception of the present war against terrorism.
Many of our young men and women have volunteered to fight in the war against
terrorism, and so far all have been blessed and have come back home.
This is not true in our neighboring parishes; several of their young people have
lost their lives so we can continue to know a free America.
LTC Michael Deville is currently assigned and works full-time as the J4 – Logistics Officer, Joint Force Headquarters, Louisiana National Guard. He began his military career by enlisting in the Louisiana National Guard in
November
1985 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in August 1987.
He has served at all levels. Significant assignments include: Battalion Operations Officer and Commander of the 769th Engineer Battalion, Deputy Commander of the 225th
Engineer Group, Recruiting and Retention Commander, Director of Human Resources
and Secretary of the General Staff.
He is the recipient of the meritorious service medal with five oak leaf clusters and various other awards for achievement and
service including the Louisiana War Cross.
LTC Deville is a graduate of Northwestern State University and the United States
Army War College.
He is married to the former Theresa Thibeaux and they have two daughters – Ashley age 13 and Kristen age 9.
Charles Watson, Commander of Four Rivers for All Veterans invites everyone to join them as they pause to remember those who gave their all for America.
Refreshments will be served following the program by Jonesville Woman’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Catahoula Relay for Life set for May 29 (published May 20, 2009)
Everyone in the community is invited to attend Catahoula Relay for Life on
Friday, May 29, 6 pm - 12 am, at the football field in Jonesville.
Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, raises funds to be
used in support of those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
What makes each Relay special is that it is personalized for the community with
the money staying to help people here in central Louisiana.
The 2009 Relay in Catahoula Parish in held in honor of Woodrow Martin, Jr, and
Raymond Rouse and in memory of Charlie Sanson and Eliza Smith.
These individuals and their families will be recognized during the evening. In addition, a survivors’ ceremony, with a victory lap and balloon release, celebrates people who have
faced cancer and prevailed.
A moving luminary service honors those survivors and reminds all that, though we
have made great strides in eradicating cancer, there are still many who have
lost the fight against this vicious disease.
Headlining the entertainment for the evening is local favorite Cuz and Company. There will also be food of all kinds, activities for everyone, as well as
auctions and raffles available at the booths of the Relay teams.
Each team will also offer information about various types of cancer making this
not only a night of fun but also an educational
opportunity about screenings and coping with cancer. Among this year’s teams are Block High School football, Catahoula Correctional Center, Catahoula
Veterinary Clinic, Crusaders for A Cure, First Baptist Church, Four Rivers Home
Health, Greater St. Mary
’s Church, Jonesville Junior Guild, Jonesville Woman’s Club, the King family, Louisiana Home Care, Sicily Island Medical Center, and
Trinity Presbyterian Church.
