Horseshoe Lake boating accident claims teen’s life  (published May 13, 2009)
A late-night, two-boat collision on Horseshoe Lake in Concordia Parish claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl from Jena last Friday night.
Cassie Finlay was brought to shore, and CPR was performed on her by a Concordia Parish Sheriff ’s deputy, but she later died as a result of her injuries.
Her parents, Richard and Melissa Finlay, were involved in the boating accident along with four other adults and five juveniles. Several sustained injuries.
Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries is conducting the investigation. They said that the parties in both boats knew each other and are from Jena. The other four adults are Denise Finlay, Jon Edwards, Chris Thomas and Regina Thomas.
The accident was called in to the Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office 911 system at 10:30 p.m. Friday.

It hasn’t yet been determined if charges will be filed in the case.
Local veterans travel to Washington, D.C.  (published May 13, 2009)
On April 25th several of Catahoula and Concordia World War II Veterans and their guardians traveled to the Nation ’s Capital to see their Memorials.  Veterans from Catahoula and Concordia Parishes were James Bird, J R Alexander, E W Walker, Kelley Pecanty and Danny Phillips.  Three of the guardians on board were from Catahoula Parish and were Larry Bird, Lana Taunton and Ruth King.
The one day trip, free of charge to WWII Veterans, provided by Louisiana Honor Air is for the Veterans to see the WWII Memorial.  World War II was over close to 60 years before a memorial was built to honor those who defended their country.  Most of the Veterans are now in their 80’s and 90’s and have never seen it.  Louisiana Honor Air will be taking it's oldest Veteran on the May 16th flight - a Veteran from the Shreveport area that turned 100 on Easter Sunday.
Upon arriving at Reagan International Airport the Veterans were greeted by the brass section of the Washington Symphony playing patriotic music. People were lined down both sides of the halls waving American flags and stopping the veterans thanking them for their service.  There is always one lady there meeting the Veterans and she always surprises the first Veteran off the plane as she dances him through the crowds.  The Veterans are stepping two feet off the ground with the reception they get at the airport.
Louisiana 5th Congressional Representative Rodney Alexander met the Veterans at the World War II Memorial.  He, along with several members of his staff including Harrisonburg native Adam Terry, visited with all the veterans as they tour this memorial.  This memorial honors all of the states in the United States and all battles fought in the various theaters of WWII. The calming effect of all the water running thru the memorial cannot dispel the sobering feeling one gets while looking at the wall of four thousand gold stars.  Each of these stars represents 100 Americans that gave their lives during this war for our freedom.
The group also visited the FDR Memorial, Korean Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, and the Tomb of the Unknown.  While at the Tomb of Unknown the group saw a ceremony of the changing of the guards and the laying of a wreath.  Many of the Veterans also visited the grave of the most decorated soldier, Audie Murphy, which is located across the road from the entrance of the Tomb of the Unknown.
One of the most moving event for the Catahoula group was when they visited the Vietnam Wall.  Ruth King had prepared pictures of all of the eight boys from Catahoula Parish and one of her cousin that was killed in Vietnam to leave at the Wall as a memorial to them.  The group was able to find all nine names on the wall and take pictures of their names on the wall with their pictures.
Upon returning back to Shreveport they were greeted by a lone bagpiper playing music as he escorted them thru an archway of soldiers to the escalator where Retired Col. Steve DePyssler announced each Veteran as they descended down the escalator escorted by an active military personnel to the Mayor of Shreveport, where he presented them with a flag from Congressman Vitter that he had flown over the Capital in their honor.
Louisiana Honor Air is a non-profit organization out of Lafayette, LA started by radio personality T D Smith after seeing a news clip of another state visiting the WWII Memorial.  Smith thought this was going to be a one time trip but thanks to him and the organization there have been about 17 trips from Louisiana and approximately 1800 WWII Veterans.  There are over 30 states doing some sort of program taking the WWII Veterans to DC but this is one time Louisiana is leading the nation in giving the WWII Veterans of Louisiana an opp ortunity to see their memorials.  Louisiana Honor Air is a private non-profit organization and is not a government program.  For more information you can visit  www.louisianahonorair.com.  There are a couple of mini video clips you can view plus there is a link where you can make a tax deductible donation to help other WWII Veterans from Louisiana see the memorials.
