Recent storms bring out the best in some locals  (published May 6, 2009)
With storms rolling through Catahoula Parish Sunday morning, the Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office was besieged with calls of downed trees and power lines and water across roads.
Volunteer firefighters and reserve deputies came out with trucks and chain saws to help clear fallen trees that were reported from Larto to Aimwell.
The Jonesville Police Department also sent officers to help with traffic near Larto where downed trees and power lines were blocking roadways.
While deputies and firefighters were responding to  reports of fallen trees and power lines, CPSO received a report of a missing 15-year-old female in the Sandy Lake area.
The youth was located later Sunday by deputies and returned to her family.
Sheriff James Kelly said he wanted to thank the first responders, volunteer firefighters and reserve deputies of Catahoula who gave of their time and effort during this brief crisis, where, fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Sheriff Kelly also extends his appreciation to Mayor Hiram Evans, Chief Bubba Roy, and members of JPD who offered their much needed assistance.

Kirby King to appear in new movie in August, 2010  (published May 6, 2009)
It seems a movie star in the making is in our midst here in Catahoula Parish.
Kirby King, a local Civil War re-enactor with the 7th Louisiana Infantry, was recently approached by filmmakers seeking extras during a re-enactment at Port Hudson.
Kirby, decked out in his Confederate garb, posed for a photo and was later contacted and told he had been selected to appear in a movie that would be filmed in south Louisiana.
"Don't shave, and don't cut your hair," they told Kirby over the phone.
The movie, Jonah Hex, is based on a DC Comic Book of the same name. It will feature stars such as John Malkovich, Josh Brolin, Will Arnett, Meg Fox, and, of course, our own Kirby King!
Kirby's scenes will be shot from May 11 through May 15 in Des Allamands, Louisiana. Jonah Hex is set to hit the big screen in August, 2010.
Congratulations and good luck, Kirby! Break a leg!
