Benefit slated to help local fire victims (published February 10, 2010)

Since the beginning of 2010, five Catahoula families, four in Jonesville and one in Harrisonburg, have lost their homes to fires.

From Jonesville, the James Branch Family, the Sherri Lynn Baker Matthews Family, the Patricia Fisher Family, and the Samuel Mills family, and Prophetess Daisy Vanburen and Family of Harrisonburg, have all seen everything they own go up in smoke.

This Friday, February 12, you can do something to help these folks out.

A benefit for these families has been scheduled for 6 p.m. at Old Daughters Baptist Church in Wildsville. Special remarks will be made from the pulpit by Pastor T.A. Baker, Jr. and Pastor Keith Branch.

The public is urged to come out and support these families. Concerned citizens thank you in advance for your help.

Library gets help from students on award program (published February 10, 2010)

The Catahoula Parish Library and the fourth grade at Harrisonburg Elementary recently participated in the 10th annual Young Readers Choice Award program.

The Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award is a reading enrichment program of the Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana underwritten by Capital One with additional support from Perma-Bound Books. The program was founded by the State Library's Youth Service Consultant, Gale Criswell, in 1999 with the first award given in 2000. The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books.

The titles that receive the most votes from the students are the award winners. The books with the second most votes are the honor books. The award or honor book authors or illustrators are invited to the Louisiana Book Festival in the fall to accept the awards.

The Catahoula Parish Library received these books free as a grant from Capital One Bank.

Mrs. Chantel Towell was especially helpful in having her class read the books and vote on their favorite one. Their vote for best book was Lawn Boy by Gary Paulsen.

The Catahoula Parish Library appreciates the Harrisonburg Elementary fourth grade and Mrs. Towell for all their enthusiasm and the time they spent reading the books. Also, thanks to Capital One Bank for donating the books and being a supporter of Louisiana's libraries.

Franklin named Student of the Year (published February 10, 2010)

Harrisonburg High School's Tameka Franklin was recently selected Student of the Year among Catahoula Parish 2010 seniors.

Crop Production Meeting slated for Feb. 15, 2010 (published February 10, 2010)

A new year brings in new hopes, plans, and promises. This is our hope for Catahoula Parish farmers. In an effort to provide farmers with the resources they will need, the local extension office will hold its annual crop production meeting on February 15th beginning at 8:15 a.m. at the recreation room of the First Baptist Church in Jonesville.

This production meeting has been approved by the Department of Agriculture for the renewal of private pesticide applicator licenses. Farmers whose license expires this year can renew their license at this meeting. This meeting is also approved for CCA points for consultants.

There will also be a WPS meeting on February 18 at 5:00 p.m. at Agrilliance in Jonesville. This meeting is for workers whose “green card” will expire this year and for any new workers producers may have.
